About Austria

Home of Hannes Schneider, father of modern downhill skiing, and alpine legends including Franz Klammer, Austria has long been a Mecca for the serious skier. Today, the nation is undergoing a rebirth of its 70s heyday and emerging as arguably Europe’s leading ski destination.

Few places on the planet deliver the combination of limitless opportunities for advanced and expert skiers and ample material for beginners the way the Arlberg does. Austria’s largest ski area offers not only spectacular scenery but a vast network of up-to-the-minute cable cars and lifts. Choose between St Anton, Stuben and St Christoph on one side, or Lech and Zürs on the other (these two resorts have recently been connected via a new state of the art Gondola lift, making it one of Europe's largest ski areas). The powder at Sonnekopf is simply glorious, while St Anton offers world-class apres-ski.

Lesser known to many Britons, yet firm favourites with locals and those in the know, Kitzbühel and Zell am Ziller are well worth exploring. They deliver a winning combination of traditional Austrian charm with sublime skiing and sweeping mountain views.
